NINETY YEARS & STILL GROWING! BROOKLIN HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY
Back in 1921, the first meeting of the Brooklin Horticultural Society was held at the Brooklin United Church. Ninety years later, almost 90 members and guests celebrated the club’s achievements as a public service and social club at the same venue at a special Anniversary Celebration. Special guests included Mayor Pat Perkins and Councillors Ken Montague and Tracy Hanson, as well as OHA President Carol Dunk, District 17 Director Sandy Rakestrow, and Assistant Director Julia Noakes.
President Fred Haggerty recognized the many Past Presidents in attendance who participated in the ceremonial cutting of the cake, decorated with the society’s flower, the sunflower. Archivist Judi Denny gave a brief but informative talk on the historical highlights of the Society.
Sue Cullen Green of the Whitby in Bloom committee presented the Society with a commemorative plaque which will be placed on the Whitby Library grounds. The anniversary committee chaired by Kathy Allam was commended for creating a very memorable event.
The evening’s entertainment was an amusing skit of a horticultural society board meeting set in 1921 complete with period costumes put on by the Backwoods Players from the Pickering Museum.
